OtterBox APL4-T4GXX-28-E4OTR Review by J. R. "Deming Jr"
I purchased this case after having 'issues' with my OtterBox Defender Case. In my opinion, the OtterBox Commuter Case is better than the Defender case for the following reasons:
1. The Defender case is a very protective case. However, it is very bulky. The Commuter is very smooth and sleek. The buttons on the case are very responsive, and the outer plastic cover looks awesome.
2. The built-in screen protector on the Defender case reduces the clarity of the iPod Touch screen. The screen protector that comes with the Commuter maintains the great resolution of the iPod Touch.
3. The flaps on the bottom of the Defender case are very unattractive and made my iPod look sloppy whenever the USB charging cord or headphones were connected. The flaps on the bottom of the Commuter case are sturdier, and actually stay in place most of the time.
4. The large size of the Defender case causes it not to fit in my external speaker system. However, the Commuter case is smaller and thinner, and can be docked in my speaker system.
5. Last but not least, the two color design of the Commuter case makes it more attractive than the Defender.
Overall, if you are willing to accept slightly less protection, the Otterbox Commuter case is a better case than the Defender.
OtterBox APL4-T4GXX-28-E4OTR Review by JayeGasmin
This is my first time writing a review after buying dozens of products on Amazon - I want my first review to be on this sleek case because it's worth spreading the word. I owned a leather flip-case prior to this one and it served me well. A few weeks ago the cover came off and my ipod touch kept popping out so I decided to buy a new one. After much searching I narrowed my search to three cases:
The Otterbox Commuter Case
The Otterbox Defender Case
The Survivor case by Griffin Technology
I wanted something that could really protect my ipod touch and was leaning towards the tough, rugged cases. The survivor case seemed like the toughest but it also was the thickest, and the sensor was covered so I quickly crossed that off the list. I then read reviews about the Defender Case and a lot of purchasers suggested to choose the defender over the commuter since it was like only a $5 difference(correct me if I'm wrong). After much contemplation I ended up buying the Otterbox Commuter Case and couldn't have been happier. Here's why:
1. The packaging was simple - I didn't need to get out my scissors like most of the packages I order.
2. The case was REAL easy to install; only took like 15 seconds with no hassle whatsoever
3. The screen protector. I actually didn't intend to use the included screen protector at first because I already had one from my last case. However, there were some bubbles from when I first installed and so decided to install it anyway. Now, a lot of other reviews say that the screen protector sucks - I beg to differ. I failed to install it the first time because I accidentally dropped it (landed on the sticky side so hair and lint got on it, my fault entirely). I tried cleaning it. I would use water and alcohol, dry it, and place it on the screen. However, lint and bubbles would always show up and I would use the included card and vigorously rub the bubbles out - after 5 attempts I gave up and decided to buy another screen protector (since my old one was already in the trash). However, after reading some articles on how to reuse screen protectors I ended up using regular scotch tape to remove the lint and it did the trick! I placed the screen protector on my ipod touch and as soon as it touched the surface it disappeared like a ninja! It was like brand new - no scratches! (even after I vigorously rubbed a plastic card on it to remove the bubbles from earlier).
tl;dr: screen protector got dirty, used tape to clean the sticky side, went on perfectly with no scratches
4. The case itself is very slim, perfect for the ipod touch 4g. One of the main reasons why I decided to get the commuter case over the defender case was because it's slim and less bulky (although some purchasers of the defender case says not by a lot). However, the ipod touch was built slim and any case that would make it any thicker would spoil it. The commuter case made it a whole lot better because it's just thick enough to make the ipod touch easier to hold and still fit in your pocket easily.
5. The color and style. I bought the red and black combination - I still can't stop staring at it. In fact, it's right next to me at this moment as I'm typing this review.
6. The sides. It makes it so much better to hold - not just because of the added grip but the texture in itself; it screams quality and comfort.
7. The buttons. This case makes pressing the buttons on my ipod touch so much easier compared to when just operating it in its bare form. I can change the volume without taking my ipod out of my pocket just by pressing it through my pants. It's awesome.
8. The port covers. A lot of people complain about the covers and how it doesn't stay on - most of the reviews I read suggest cutting them off completely. However, I believe that the covers work just fine - they stay put when I need them to be. I just kept using the covers and pretty soon I guess they broke in - they never pop out.
9. The open hole in the back that shows the apple logo on the ipod touch isn't a problem at all - I actually like it. Although it may attract scratches (like some reviews suggest) I don't find it to be an issue because I brushed the back of my ipod which makes scratches less noticeable and adds a great effect to it as well. If you aren't familiar with the brushed metal mod, it only requires a sponge and some patience (there are several websites you can look up for instructions).
10. Lastly, the case is very durable and it protects my ipod very well. I've dropped it a few times already (I'm very clumsy) and so far no scratches on the case or damages to the ipod itself.
I believe that this case is prefect for normal use. The survivor case and the defender case are really meant for people who go rock climbing, who use their ipod during sports, who have OCD when it comes to protecting their devices, or people who have big holes in their pockets. If you just want protection with added comfort and style, I highly recommend this case.
EDIT: A couple days have passed and I've noticed several things about this case worth mentioning. First of all, this case is still very solid - it has done a great job protecting my iPod. I went to a couple Christmas parties and left my iPod in my front pocket, forgetting several times that it was there because of how thin the case is - this in a definite plus in my book! And the times I did pull out my iPod people would tell me how awesome my "phone" looked, until I told them that it wasn't actually an iPhone but an iPod touch. They commented on how sophisticated this case made my iPod look, and how they were amazed that such a sleek case was made for the iPod touch (since most of the time cases for iPhones steal the show). Lastly, because of this case I had peace of mind to lend my iPod to my nieces and nephews when they wanted to play Angry Birds or Fruit Ninja - I trusted the build quality and the screen protector the came with it, and in the end it delivered as promised. This case is definitely worth it.
OtterBox APL4-T4GXX-28-E4OTR Review by Disneyfan "M.M." (Michigan, USA)
The Commuter Series OtterBox for the iPod touch 4th Generation is an AMAZING case!! I love it!! I did not realize that the silicon and polycarbonate shell separate. I thought that is nice and it makes it easy to clean the little dust that is attracted to it. I will say that without the iPod in the case it seems a little flimsy, but with the iPod inside of it is quite nice. I have found that it is a very protective case since the few times I have dropped it and I am sure that there is still many more to come. ;-) It is not meant to be as big and bulky as say the Defender series which will offer more protection for the iPod. This as one can tell by the name is meant for easy transport and the sleekness of it. It easily slips into a pocket and takes up very little space. Next, I must say that I didn't know really what to think of the silicon plugs at first , I knew that they said it helped to keep the dust out of the access ports and therefor helped protect the ports from build up. But know that I have them on the actual iPod I think it is very nice feature. Now, I like that OtterBox has kept a hole in the back so you can see the apple. Some people think that this is bad because it is not protected. I on the other hand think that it is nice to still be able to see the apple and I don't think it really wrecks the apple and surrounding area. The silicon is nice and flexible. Usually with silicon overtime it will separate from the device. But with the polycarbonate shell over it seems to hold its place and not stretch as it normally would. OtterBox has also used another pro of silicon and textured it. It is textured on the sides where you would grip it in a hand. On the left and right of the polycarbonate shell on the back. This makes it not slip as easily. To wrap up, I have found that the case fits very well over my iPod. I had got the red and black case and I love the color. The red is not to bright. It is like a primary color red, a shade or two darker. I love the mix if the two colors (red and black). Overall, I would definitely recommend this case and if I ever need another device protected I will for sure buy OtterBox. :-) I had got a sample from Otterbox.com
